The Tricolored Heron, known scientifically as Egretta tricolor, is a slender, medium-sized wading bird found primarily in the coastal regions of the Americas, from the United States down to northern South America. This heron is distinguished by its vibrant breeding plumage, featuring a slate-blue body, white belly, and reddish neck and head, although non-breeding adults have a more subdued coloration. It's an agile hunter, known for its unique foraging behavior where it stirs up prey with its feet in shallow waters, often seen dashing through the water with wings partially spread. Habitats include marshes, estuaries, and mangrove swamps, where it feeds mainly on small fish, but also consumes crustaceans, insects, and amphibians.
Complementary blue double matte, with classic white frame and acrylic front. Ready to hand!
I used Arches 300 lb watercolor cold press paper and winsor & newton watercolor paints.
The background is pure white. Some images may look like the background is darker, but it is pure white.
Prints available as well.
Feel free to message the artist if you have any questions.
